Why the Full Moon Can Feel Big for Kids

Children are often more sensitive around the time of a full moon. Emotions can feel bigger, energy can rise, and sleep may become more difficult. This gentle guided relaxation is designed to support children during these heightened times, helping them feel grounded, calm, and safe.

Step into the glowing world of the Flower Moon. The name traditionally given to the May full moon, symbolising the blooming of spring. In The Flower Moon children are invited to the moons magical night garden. They will practice flower breathing and hear a soothing affirmation:
“Just like a flower, I grow in my own time.”

Now guide them through Flower Breathing, a simple mindfulness tool they learned in the story.

Here’s a Flower Breathing Script

“Let’s imagine a flower in your hand… or right in front of your nose. Maybe it’s a pink daisy, or a glowing tulip like in the moon’s garden. Can you see it in your mind?”

(Pause briefly)

“Now take a slow breath in through your nose… like you’re gently smelling the flower.”
(Pause for 2–3 seconds)
“And breathe out slowly through your mouth… like you’re blowing the petals into the wind.”(Repeat 2–3 more times, slowly)

Inhale… smell the flower
Exhale… blow the petals

“That’s it. So soft and gentle, just like the breeze in the garden.”
“Each breath is helping your body feel more relaxed… and your heart feel more peaceful.”

Optional calming additions:

  • A lavender spray
  • A real flower picked from the garden
  • A night light shaped like the moon or stars

Let your child know they can use their Flower Breath anytime they feel wiggly, upset, or need help calming down.
