Let’s get started with our playful, cookie breathing activity for kids!

Spark the Imagination:

Start by telling your child a short, playful story that sparks the imagination, the senses and sets the scene.

“Imagine you have a warm, yummy cookie in front of you. It smells so delicious, and you really want to breathe in the sweet freshly baked cookie smell..”

Show Them How:

  • Inhale: Tell the child to pretend they are smelling the cookie. Ask them to take a slow, deep breath in through their nose, like they’re smelling the delicious cookie. Make the breath deep and slow.
  • Exhale: Then, have them pretend they’re blowing on the cookie to cool it down. Ask them to gently blow out through their mouth, as if they’re cooling the cookie. Making the breath slow and controlled.

Practice Together:

Encourage your child to repeat the process a few times. You can say:

“Take a big sniff of the cookie, and then blow out slowly to cool it down.”

Repeat 3–5 times to help the child relax and focus.

Make it Playful:

  • Use a pretend cookie to hold whilst practicing. This adds a tangible, fun element to the exercise. I love this wooden cookie set! So cute.
  • Bake cookies together and practice this activity alongside cooking. Nothing beats the real smell of cookies straight out the oven.
  • Read a book alongside. I love the ‘Angry Cookie’ by Laura Dockrill. This would be a great book to explore when using Cookie breathing could be helpful.
  • Make a Kindness Cookie Jar and some cardboard cookies!
  • Colour in the free Cookie Breathing poster and breathing card – See Below.
