Why is Self Confidence Important for Kids
Building confidence in children is incredibly important for their overall well-being and success in life. When children have confidence, they are more likely to:
- Take risks
- Try new things
- Believe in their abilities
- Perform better academically
- Have stronger relationships with peers and adults
- Hold a greater sense of self-worth.
Confident children are also better equipped to handle challenges and setbacks. They are more likely to persevere in the face of obstacles and view failures as opportunities for growth just like a superhero. This resilience is a valuable real life Superhero Skill that can serve them well throughout their lives.
Additionally, building confidence in children can help prevent issues like anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. By nurturing their sense of self-confidence, we can help children develop a positive and healthy self-image that will stay with them as they grow into adulthood.

How can Superhero’s Build Children’s Confidence?
Superhero’s have been a big hit in our household, so if you have a little one who loves Spider Man, Hulk, Wonder woman or any other superhero’s is a great way to introduce healthy coping skills to manage stress and boost their mood!
My son created his own Batman Breaths when he was about three, it was not only really cute but helped him to learn early about his own superhero skills.
Children often look up to superheroes and aspire to be like them, my little boy absolutely loves Batman and Ninjago. By tapping into children’s love of superheroes, we can help them to build their own confidence and recognise their own strengths.
Just like our children, Superheroes also have unique abilities and strengths that they use to help themselves and help others around them. Knowing this can inspire children to discover and use their own strengths and special abilities.
With this in mind, let’s look at how to build confidence with Superhero Breaths with kids…….

How to Take a Thankful Owl Breath
When we practice superhero breaths, we are not only practicing our super power of breathing mindfully. We are also using open and confident body language. Superhero breaths can help us to calm our bodies, our minds, practice confident body language and practice positive self talk through affirmations.
Ready to practice some gratitude and relax? Let’s go!

Instructions:
Step 1 – Introduce:
Tell your child ‘We are going to try an activity called superhero breaths, we are going to use our breath and our bodies to feel calm and confident like superhero’s.”
Before you begin, ask your child what is super about them. “I want you to think what is super about you? What does your amazing body do? What does your incredible mind think? What amazing skills or strengths do you have?”
Step 2 – Spark the Imagination:
Ask your children to get comfortable and if they like they can close their eyes. “Now, let’s Imagine we are superhero’s. We have an important mission to complete, but we are feeling scared as it means we are going to do something we have never done before. So we have to take a superhero breath, find our confidence and act, think and be the superhero’s we are!”
Step 3 – Show:
- First let’s act like a superhero. Stand / sit tall (exaggerate stretching tall).
- Pop your hands just above your hips and push our shoulders back (demonstrate slumped shoulders vs shoulders relaxed and back).
- Raise your head and chest too. Now you are looking like superhero’s.
- Next let’s think like superhero’s. Say / think: Today I will be my own superhero!
- Next breathe in and feel as your ribs expand. As you breathe out, relax your arms.
Step 4 – Lead
Now ask children to try this activity them selves.
Step 5 – Reflect
- Ask children to share their superhero strengths
- How did they feel when they stood confidently
- Take a movement break and ask children to bring fly off into the sky
Reflection:
- Invite children to describe how it felt to pose confidently.
- Ask children to share what makes them a superhero
- What are their favourute super hero’s and why?
