What is Determination?
Determination is a quality that helps you keep working towards your goals, even when things get tough. It means that you are willing to put in time and effort to achieve what you want, and that you don’t give up easily.
For example, imagine you are trying to learn how to ride a bike. At first, it might be really hard and you might fall down a lot. But if you are determined, you will keep practicing, even when it feels frustrating or scary. Over time, you will get better and better, until you can ride your bike without any help.
Being determined can help you in lots of different areas of your life, like school, sports, or learning a new skill. It’s important to remember that it’s okay to make mistakes or struggle along the way – what matters is that you keep trying and keep working towards your goals.
Why is the Being Determined an Important Strength for Kids?
Determination is an essential quality in children as it helps them to achieve their goals and overcome challenges they may face in life. When children are determined, they are more likely to persist through difficult situations and not give up easily.
Children who possess the strength of determination tend to be more confident and have a positive attitude towards challenges. They are able to set achievable goals for themselves and work towards achieving them, which leads to a sense of accomplishment and pride.
How to Teach a Determination
Here are 3 ways you can teach children determination:
Set goals: Encourage your children to set goals for themselves, whether it’s learning a new skill or achieving good grades in school. Help them break down their goals into smaller, achievable steps so they can track their progress.
Be a role model: Children often learn by example, so it’s important to model determination and perseverance yourself. Share your own stories of overcoming challenges and setbacks, and let them see you working hard to achieve your own goals.
Celebrate successes: When your children achieve their goals, celebrate their success and acknowledge their hard work and determination. This will help them feel proud of their accomplishments and motivated to continue striving for success.
Teaching mindfulness and determination to kids is an excellent way to help them build emotional resilience and develop a positive mindset. Mindfulness refers to the practice of being present and fully engaged in the moment, while determination is the quality of staying committed to a goal, even when faced with obstacles.
“We are going to practice deep breathing and launching ourselves into space like a rocket.” Share the Rocket breaths rhyme.
Step 2 – Spark the Imagination:
“Imagine that you are a strong and sturdy rocket, you have a space mission to visit a new planet. You feel determined to complete your mission and know that you won’t give up”
Step 3 – Show:
Optional: Display the Rocket breaths poster and then explain the Rocket breaths activity.
“I’ll show you how we will begin, everyone stand up nice and straight, bring your hands together above your heads, like this. This is us getting ready for the take off. I’m going to count to five and when I get to five, we will breath in and blast off using our exhale. We can make a whooshing sound during the take off and even circle around the room (if you have space)”
Step 4 – Lead:
“Now lets try this all together. Everyone stand up straight, we are on a space mission to find a new planet.
We are determined and will not give up on our mission to find the planet Relaxonia.
Arms above our heads and hands pressed together. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Inhale through our noses and blast off, exhale with a whooshing sound.
When you have finished your mission land backdown seated safely with crossed legs.”
Step 5 – Reflect:
Invite children to describe how they feel afterwards and ask them what they noticed in their bodies? How did it feel to be a determined rocket?
You can then follow this breathing activity with the free colouring page or one of the other creative activities listed at the end of the post.
